5 Things More Likely Than You Having a Job
01/20/2010

Are you reading this at 3 in the afternoon, in your boxers, during a break in checking the job listings on Craig's List?

Odds are, that's the case.

According to the number jockeys over at BookOfOdds.com of people in the US 16 years-old or older, only 1 in 1.71 are employed. That's 58%... meaning the other 42% - or 3 out of every 7 people around you right now - are jobless. (Unless you're in a Starbucks, then I'm guessing the odds are higher.)

But there is hope. In fact, there are a lot of worse things that could happen to you that are a lot more likely than being employed. For instance...

The odds of an adult never having had sex on a first date are 1 in 1.41, or 71%. (Meaning, sadly, only 29% of you know how to pick 'em.)

If you're between the ages of 30 and 44 you have a better chance of being diagnosed with a mental disorder: 1 in 1.57 (64%), than having a job. (Except at my last job, where it seemed everyone there was employed AND had a mental disorder.)

More people are likely to have a library card than a job. Check your wallet, 1 in 1.47 of you, or 68%, will have one stuffed in there. (Right next to the food stamps.)

The odds you'll get a ticket if you are pulled over for speeding are also greater than having a job to speed to. 1 in 1.37 (73%) are not going to be able to talk their way out of it. (BG made up odds: The chance any of those 73% are women with a C-cup or larger? 0%.)

And finally, on the bright side, you have a better chance of surviving a shark attack than you do having a cubicle to go to every morning. 1 in 1.02, or 98%, of people bitten, live to tell the tale. With odds like that, you might as well just go back to bed.

No... because your odds of having a job are for people over 16. Most people between the ages of 30 and 44 are not in school or retired and would be much more likely to have a job.
