Did you know that two breweries make up over 80% of the market in the US? This means that one out of every two beers served in our great country is made by either Anheuser-Busch or MillerCoors.
For almost 8o years, these two big-box beer pushers have controlled the beer market, telling the public what they want and making it their goal to force out anyone that gets in their way. As Americans we take pride in our freedom of choice. No one tells us what to do and certainly no one tells us what to drink... right?
Scheduled to hit store shelves on September 22,
Beer Wars is a documentary film by award-winning director, producer and writer Anat Baron (she actually used to run the show at Mike’s Hard Lemonade), that takes one hell of a hard look at what exactly is going on behind the scenes of the beer industry in America. If you thought that Antietam was vicious, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The monopolistic pushers of all that pale, tasteless yellow swill are out for blood and they won’t stop until they’ve crushed every last craft brewery on the planet. Sure, they want Americans to have a choice, as long as it’s one of their products. To put this into perspective, back in 1900, there were nearly 2,000 breweries in the US and by 1984 there were 83. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what’s going on.
Beer Wars does for brewing and the beer industry what Michael Moore’s
Sicko did for healthcare. Agree or disagree, a film like this almost dares you to remain inactive. There’s a revolution brewing and it has the outdated corporate behemoths scrambling to remain relevant. Consumers are catching on and we are no longer content to have our beers selected for us. Today, there are nearly 1,500 breweries operating in America and that number is growing. This small minority that has made it their life’s work to create great beer instead of massive amounts of sameness, is pushing hard for change. You owe it to yourself to get pissed and take back your right to choose. If you aren’t pumped up now, when you watch your copy of
Beer Wars you will be. And don’t forget to crack open a cold
craft brew while you’re watching.
