Release Your Inner Jacques Cousteau
05/31/2007

Last week SANYO announced the release of the world's first waterproof camcorder. In their words, it's "built for family fun above and below water." I'm confused. Using it a the beach? Sure. For boating, fishing and during dive trips? Of course. But what kind of "family fun" takes place underwater? Nobody buys a $500 camcorder to film their baby reenacting the cover of Nirvana's "Nevermind".

In any event, this technological wonder has the ability to submerge to a depth of five feet for up to an hour at a time, recording for about 30 minutes. It can also capture up to 4000 6 megapixel still photos and 10 hours of full motion video on an 8 GB SDHC memory card.

So, let's see if there are any facts that don't make me think this thing has potential as a wonder gadget for pool stalkers. It's pocket-sized (nope), has a 5x optical zoom (no again), has anti-shake image stabilizer (come on now), is "a snap to operate with the use of only one hand" (that one's comically off the charts on the Unintentional Sexual Innuendo Scale), and (here's one) it comes in blue, yellow, or white.

It will be available mid-June, and you must be 18 and over to buy it. I made that last part up. But while most of us would use this for shooting great vids of family and friends enjoying the beach and diving, you know budding Girls Gone Wild pervs will be lining up, hoping to increase their YouTube views with "Beach Girls Lose Their Bottoms" videos.
