Drink Like a Mad Man
08/14/2009

The season premier of Mad Men is this Sunday. And to honor the hard drinking cast, Canadian Club has put together a menu of classic, and updated classic, cocktails to fit their personalities.

It's the perfect excuse to get everyone together, turn on Draper and the rest of the crew, and drink like Mad Men.

Don Draper: Old Fashioned Cocktail
Don keeps his drink classic with the Old Fashioned Canadian Club Cocktail.

In a short wide-mouthed tumbler:
Place a lump of sugar, to which add as much Angostura Bitters as the lump will absorb.
Then dissolve the lump of sugar in a little water.
Nearly fill the tumbler with small ice cubes.
Add a wine-glass full of Canadian Club 12 year Reserve whisky.
Add a twisted lemon peel.

Betty Draper: CC Cosmopolitan
Her edgy attitude and progressive ways make her perfect for the CC Cosmopolitan.

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add:
2 parts Canadian Club Classic 12
1 part Cointreau
1 part Cranberry Juice
1 Twist of lime

Roger Sterling: The Millionaire’s Manhattan
You know you’ve made it with this cocktail. Sterling Cooper’s top exec would sip on nothing less.

1 part Harvey’s Bristol Cream
2 parts Canadian Club Classic 12

Fill a lowball glass with ice and add ingredients.
Stir and garnish with maraschino cherry.

Joan Holloway: The Burgundy
This seductive and fiery red head is sweet and tart, just like the Burgundy.

1 1/2 parts Canadian Club
4 parts ginger ale
Splash of cranberry juice

that is the absolute worst recipe I have ever heard for an old fashioned a traditional old fashioned has the following
2-3 oz whiskey of choice (honestly rye whiskey is the best for this no offense Canadian Club)
(the muddled orange is optional but much tastier) a slice of ORANGE muddled (which you also will see as the flag garnish several times throughout seasons one and two, not lemon although some bars do use a lemon twist as the flag as well. yes my too much time on my hands ass did flick it through to make sure a perfect example is season two episode three before he leaves the bar and wrecks on the way to the beach house to get some)
a teaspoon of sugar or a splash or simple syrup
2 LIGHT DASHES of bitters (if you use the amount above you would have the nastiest tasting drink ever)
mix this into a old fashioned glass (your traditional tumbler is actually called an old fashioned glass and yes it was named after the drink) with ice and serve

if you serve the above mentioned "use as much bitter as the sugar will absorb you will get vial looks from the person drinking as this will be a horridly disgusting drink at that point, and any good bartender would slap the shit out of you for making it like that.

WHOA there aesop, do your cocktail history. The fruit is NOT meant to be part of an Old Fashioned it makes a great drink a nasty syrupy mess. And Canadian Club is fine, it's actually got a lot of rye in it. Sorry fella, but you don't know cocktails.

And sorry Canadian Club, but Roger Sterling drinks Gibson martinis. C'mon, everyone knows that!
