If you think of port wines as overly expensive, and picture old guys sitting in stuffy club rooms, sipping port and mumbling about financial markets, think again. Many excellent ports can be had for under $40. They also pack a lot of complex flavors, and a powerful alcohol punch, into each bottle. (Most table wines are 11%-14% alcohol by volume, ports average about 20%.)
A true guy's drink, this fortified wine was the product of war. A series of wars with France in the mid-17th Century sent both Dutch and British merchants looking for alternative sources for wine. The British bought large quantities of wines from the Douro Valley in Portugal in large boats that could handle the rough seas. They added brandy to stabilize the wines for shipment back to England. And port wines were born.
Dow's has been making port since 1798 and their 20 Years Old Tawny Port is a top tawny. Here are some bullet points:
- It's made in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, making it a true Port.
- It's aged twenty years in seasoned
oak casks which give it its tawny color.
- Typically sweet wines, this tawny has raisiny fruit aromas with hints of honey and a rich, nutty flavor.
- It will keep for weeks in the fridge after opening.
- They do not require any decanting to drink. Just pull the cork and pour.
- Pairs perfectly with rich, full-flavored cheeses, and is great after dinner with dessert.
