Lucid - The Legal Absinthe
05/01/2007

Nytimes.com posted a story this past Sunday on Lucid, a new - and legal - absinthe that will soon be available in the US.

A longtime favorite of booze-soaked 19th century artists and writers like Toulouse-Lautrec and Oscar Wilde, absinthe has been illegal in the US because it contains thujone - which may or may not be toxic, depending on who you ask.
Absinthe is an anise-flavored spirit distilled from wormwood and is prized more for being highly alcoholic than for its taste. It delivers such a strong high that many drinkers have risked prosecution by smuggling it into this country. Now they won't have to.

Viridian Spirits, the makers of Lucid, claim theirs is authentic absinthe, just without the toxic thujone. They claim that original absinthe popular in the 1800's contained only very little thujone anyway, so removing it entirely does not negatively affect their version whatsoever.

Head over to www.drinklucid.com for more info on when and where Lucid will be available.

actually Absente uses Southern Wormwood. Lucid uses Grande Wormwood, which is what real absinthe uses. so Lucid is supposed to be closer to actual absinthe.
