This Week's Wine - Pierre Joudan Cuvee Belle Rose
12/28/2007

In a previous post (read it here), I explained some things to know when buying champagne. One was that all champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is champagne. (True champagne is produced in the Champagne region of France.) But that doesn't mean that sparkling wines are any less desirable.

This week's selection from WorldWineBoutique.com is a South African sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir grapes that will add a little color to your New Year's Eve celebration. And contrary to what you may think, the rose color does not mean it is a cheap, "pink champagne". Just the opposite. This particular bottle has been getting rave reviews.

Here are the bullet points:
- Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes
- One of the first South African wine makers to produce a sparkling wine in the Méthode Champenoise (meaning the wine has undergone a second fermentation in the bottle, which is what creates the bubbles. It is the preferred method of making sparkling wine.)
- The blush color comes from carbonic maceration (internal berry fermentation), which extracts the elegant color and the flavors of the Pinot Noir grape, but not the harsh tannins.
- It is a dry sparkling wine.

$26.99 per bottle
