Dry Cleaning at Home Suits You
07/19/2007

Guys spend billions a year on dry cleaning. Adding regularly to the cost of our clothes and helping George move on up to a deeeluxe apartment in the sky. George, I love ya, but I'm tired of my money paying for your deeeluxe rent.

If you're just looking to clean and freshen your suits, sweaters or dress pants - and there's no heavy stains or ground-in dirt on the collars or cuffs - you can achieve the same results as your dry cleaner, at home and for a helluva lot less.

A product like Dry Cleaner's Secret can help. They're simple enough that you don't have to be a laundry guru to use them. All you do is place up to four garments in your dryer with the dry cleaning sheet, set the timer for 20 minutes and let 'em roll on medium heat. Take them out fresh, wrinkle-free and ready to wear again.

How much can you save? Each single-use sheet costs about $1.67 and can clean up to four pieces of clothing. Meaning it costs you about 42 cents per cleaning. Big savings over the average $6.50 it costs to dry clean a suit. And the don't contain the harmful chemicals your dry cleaner uses, meaning they are gentler on your clothes.

But don't tell your dry cleaner to kiss your Armani-suited ass just yet. These cleaning sheets are not a cure-all. While the sheets can be used for spot cleaning small stains prior to hitting the drier, set-in stains, large stains and ground-in dirt still need to be handled by a pro. The sheets are also not recommended for fur, leather, suede or velvet. (Sorry Elvis.) And your laundered dress shirts that come back all clean and nicely pressed? Those have to keep going too.

But overall, if you're looking to freshen up your suits and sweaters for everyday wear, I'd pick spending a few cents over a few dollars any day. And spend the savings on my own deluxe apartment.

That's an evil genius concept. I've been getting by washing my shirts in the washing machine but they certainly don't come out wrinkle free.
I wouldn't put my suit in a washing machine if you paid me.

But if this product can really takes wrinkles out of shirts, it's definitely worth it. Ironing is a real pain, and dry cleaner fees are ridiculous - never mind the fact that you have to drive there.

What sort of stores sell them?

One Man. One Year. $100,000. Not bad dry cleaning money.
