Got a little gung-ho during a game of Wii Bowling and ended up spearing your massive flat-screen? Well instead of being stuck wasting your time on useless pursuits like reading or talking to your family, you can pick up the
EyeTV Hybrid from Elgato and stay tuned in via your computer.
Compatible with Mac or PC, the EyeTV is a TV tuner stick (smallest in the country) that plugs into any USB port. It has a cable outlet to receive any digital, analog, or composite signal available, allowing you to change channels with a simple mouse click, or via the included remote.
The EyeTV’s set-up was incredibly speedy -- probably around the length of a commercial break. The only real wait was to allow the tuner to compile all the different available signals (many of which might not be available regularly on your cable box), but even that didn’t take more than 20 minutes, tops.
One of the EyeTV Hybrid’s most impressive features is
its digital video recorder letting you record live TV, rewind, freeze frame (especially useful for topless scenes…err…I mean sports replays), or any other function like that of a cable box DVR. What makes the EyeTV recording capabilities so special though, is its ability to upload recordings onto any iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I managed to catch the series premiere of
Game of Thrones on my iPod Touch in HD, and with a simple App was able to live stream TV onto the iPod as well. If you factor in the monthly service fee of a DVR from your cable company, over time, the EyeTV Hybrid pays for itself.
Between being able to watch live TV on your computer, being a portable DVR, giving you the ability to digitally convert old VHS tapes, and live stream sports and shows onto mobile devices, the versatility of the EyeTV Hybrid is unmatched.
