Let me get one thing out of the way right up front: I do not promote the heinous act of taking endless self-serving selfies. (An act that should be punished by having one’s eyes forced open, strapped to a chair, watching an endless loop of Anchorman 2)

But… I do agree there are times when getting a shot of yourself is not only necessary, but also essential. For instance, you run into Kate Upton on the beach just as the sun is setting.

For those times, an arm’s length shot wont cut it. (Especially since most smart phone cameras tend to distort your face at close range… and you don’t want to look like some bulbous monster next to Kate.) Instead, reach for the Smart Selfie Extension Arm.

While compacted, the Smart Selfie is only 9.6-inches long and weighs a mere 5.6 ounces, meaning you can fit it in your pack easily. When called into duty, the stick telescopes out to just over 3-feet long. With controls on the handle and a secure, spring-loaded swivel clamp on the business end, the Smart Selfie connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Check your look in the screen, get the shot lined up, and snap the shutter by pressing a button on the handle.

I gave the Smart Selfie a try, and found a huge difference between taking shots with my arm stretched out, trying to hit the shutter without moving the phone, and just pushing a button to deliver way better shots. With a little practice you can angle the clamp so the stick is out of the frame, keeping your arm down to make it look like someone else took the shot for you. (Which, I guess, makes it look unselfie.)

Does this mean you’ll be seeing me duckfacing on Instagram any time soon? No. But it does mean my action shots are going to include way more action and not just my distorted face. Which we should all be thankful for.
