Not Instant Coffee, Express Coffee
11/15/2007

Your cousin's holiday party is winding down and you've been chatting up his wife's best friend. (One of the few side benefits of attending a bunch of these shindigs around this time of year is it increases the number of new women you meet.) You suggest coffee back at your place. Maybe some dessert. She agrees.

If you don't have a working coffee pot (and why not?), don't reach for the instant coffee. It never tastes right. And you don't want to serve her crappy coffee her first time over. RK Express Coffee is a great alternative, it can be made quickly, (so there's no awkward down time), and tastes much better than powdered instant.

They make it by slow-roasting top quality gourmet beans, blending them with water, and filtering the coffee into a concentrate without using any chemicals, unlike powdered instants. All you do is add a little hot water to bring it back to life.

Another advantage to having a coffee concentrate like RK Express around is that it can be used in recipes or for smoothies. Or, better yet, in cocktails. So when you get back to your place, make her an Irish Java Jolt (recipe after the jump), instead of just a plain coffee. And if you've been invited to a party and want to show off some culinary skills, (without having to actually have any), make this Cappuccino Coffee Cake. If you can boil water, you can make this cake. And, as I've said, women love it when you bake for them. Available in Breakfast Blend, Mocca Java, Vanilla Hazelnut and Decaf. Irish Java Jolt
1 oz Irish whiskey
2 oz RK Express Coffee
10 oz hot water
1 tsp sugar
1 oz cream
Cinnamon

Add 10 oz of hot water to 2 oz of RK Express coffee. Mix in the whiskey and a level teaspoon of sugar. Pour the cream gently over a warmed spoon. Top with cinnamon.

Cappuccino Coffee Cake
1 premade sponge cake
1 oz of RK Express Coffee
1 cup of boiling water
1 cup of condensed milk
2 teaspoons of gelatin
Cocoa, for topping
Assorted fruit, for topping
Whipped cream, for topping, if desired

Line a suitably sized starsol cake tin with foil and place the premade sponge cake inside.

Add the boiling water to 1 oz. of RK Express Coffee. Mix for thirty seconds.

Dissolve the gelatin in the boiling coffee mix. Pour in the condensed milk.

Pour the mixture over the sponge cake evenly.

Place in your refrigerator for up to four hours, or until set.

Top with cocoa, fruit, and whipped cream (if desired).

Coffee puts the system under the strain of metabolizing a deadly acid-forming drug, depositing its insoluble cellulose, which cements the wall of the liver, causing this vital organ to swell to twice its proper size. In addition, coffee is heavily sprayed. (Ninety-two pesticides are applied to its leaves.) Diuretic properties of caffeine cause potassium and other minerals to be flushed from the body.

All this fear went away when I quit, and it was a book that inspired me to do it called The Truth About Caffeine by Marina Kushner. There are five things I liked about this book:

1) It details--thoroughly--the ways in which caffeine may damage your health.

2) It reveals the damage that coffee does to the environment. Specifically, coffee was once grown in the shade, so that trees were left in place. Then sun coffee was introduced, allowing greater yields but contributing to the destruction of rain forests. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else.

3) It explains how best to go off coffee. This is important. If you try cold turkey, as most people probably do, the withdrawal symptoms will likely drive you right back to coffee.

4) Helped me find a great resource for the latest studies at CaffeineAwareness.org

5) Also, if you drink decaf you won’t want to miss this special free report on the dangers of decaf available at http://www.soyfee.com
