The 5 Best Playoff Beards in the NHL
05/06/2011

Playoff beards are arguably one of the best traditions in any sport, and it’s almost as fun to look at the players who can’t grow a beard (we’re looking at you, Sidney Crosby during Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup run a couple years ago), but today, the focus is on the guys who could hide a meal in their beard.

Shea Weber, Nashville

We’re finally seeing the full potential of Weber’s beard as the Predators are finally in the second round of the playoffs. Nashville is giving Vancouver all they can handle through the first three games of the series, so we’ll be seeing more of this beard over the next week or so.

Scott Hartnell, Philadelphia

Hartnell’s beard is legendary and if there was a Playoff Beard Hall of Fame, it would be one of the first to go in. It could probably even make playoff NHL betting picks if it wanted to, and the only thing stopping it is that we don’t know if there’s a season.

Todd Bertuzzi, Detroit

On a team full of great playoff beards, Bertuzzi is the best of the bunch, although Henrik Zetterberg is hot on his heels. It seemed like Bertuzzi had a beard halfway through the first period of Detroit’s first game of the postseason, and it was on from there.

Joe Thornton, San Jose

If only Thornton’s beard could help him play well in big games more consistently. It does look more full than it has in recent years, though, so maybe Thornton (and the Sharks) are shaking the underachieving tag. That beard is certainly living up to its potential.

Ryan Malone, Tampa

One of the most underrated players in the league also has one of the most underrated beards in the league, and it’s a beard that is powering Tampa Bay to a surprising 3-0 lead over Washington. Malone should have a constant place in the playoffs because he can play forward or defense, and he does all of the gritty things needed to be success. And look at that beard: it just inspires you and your team to step up.
