What Are the Odds? Wild Card Rematch Edition
01/08/2010

Three out of four of this weekend's wild card games feature rematches from week 17. This got the excited number crunchers over at BookOfOdds.com sharpening their pencils, installing fresh batteries in their calculators, and letting their imaginary girlfriends know not to expect them home for dinner.

After some mathematical wizardry I'm sure involved a bank of supercomputers and several Asian kids (you number fans can get the details here), they found that the odds of having 3 out of 4 wild card games be exact rematches from the week before are 1 in 1,725.

Which are just about the same odds as being diagnosed with lung cancer: 1 in 1,668. Or twice as likely as the chance you'll end up on the organ donor list, waiting for a kidney: 1 in 3,496. (A little morbid, but interesting.)

You've got a much better chance, just 1 in 844, at winning $10 with a Mega Millions scratch off ticket.

Curiously, they didn't figure the odds of the Cowboys actually winning a playoff game...
