XUXU - Fresh Strawberries and Vodka in a Bottle
05/02/2007

Last week I posted a study on the multiplying effect alcohol has on the antioxidant properties of strawberries. After reading that post someone tipped me to XUXU (pronounced "zu zu"), an all-natural drink from Germany now available in the US, that contains 66% pure strawberry puree mixed with vodka. Ah, German ingenuity.

XUXU is a longtime regional favorite referred to as "The Heavenly Kiss". It can be served cold as a shot, mixed with sparkling wine, blended into cocktails, or (and this is interesting) used as a dessert topping over ice cream, cakes and tarts. (Just keep telling yourself it's healthier.)

Since it contains fresh fruitand there are no preservatives, each bottle has an expiration date. And they suggest you finish the bottle soon after opening. Not something you'll have to be told twice.

If you're looking for something to mix up for that bikini-clad hottie down at the community pool, here's a couple of summer drink recipes. For more info and recipes you can visit www.xuxu.de.

XUXUBANA
2 oz XUXU
4 oz banana juice
Pour the banana juice into a long drink glass, add 2 cubes of ice. Slowly pour XUXU into the glass so that it does not blend with the banana juice. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.

XUXU Tropic
1 1/3 oz XUXU
2/3 oz dark rum
4 oz passion fruit nectar
Shake well with ice and strain into a long drink glass. Garnish with a strawberry.

XUXU Energy
2 oz XUXU
1 oz vodka
4 oz Red Bull
Blend XUXU and vodka. Fill with Red Bull.

This is one of my favorite cheap drinks, glad to hear it's coming to the US. I'd been looking for an alternative here (since I had found cheaper, albeit less palatable, knock-offs in Germany). Discovered it at a bar as a shot while I studied in Austria, but it's much more economical by the bottle there (though rather pricy in any form in Mallorca/Ibiza). I prefer it with tonic & vodka - it is a little sweet as is. Also - they actually pronounced Xuxu like "ksu ksu" (as X's are usually said in German, as rarely as that is).
