Your Bachelor Bedroom: Here’s How to Get it Right
Your bedroom can literally be the win-all or lose-all when you finally get her back to your place. She’s already got it in her head that a single guy’s bedroom is littered with dirty socks, half eaten fast food, and a beer can pyramid. (Thanks every rom-com ever.) So don’t be the guy who proves Katherine Heigl right.
Before you claim that’s not you, take a look around. If you’re bedroom could use a little polishing here and there, here are four handy tips to set you on your way to romantic success.
1. Non-Creepy Color
I get that you want to set a mood, but stop before you get any Hugh Hefner ideas. Even Hugh Hefner doesn’t work for Hugh Hefner anymore. Girls want to feel relaxed, not like they’re about to ear their bunny ears out. So ditch that red paint and those black bed sheets. (Negative bonus points if you bought ‘em in satin.) Instead go for more muted tones, keeping things relaxed. But if you do want to add some dark, choose a deep brown or green to hit the wall behind the bed for a little added luxury.
2. Comfort and Cleanliness
Three rules when it comes to bed linens: 1. Change your sheets, 2. Change your sheets, and 3. Change your sheets. I can’t say it enough. A recent study found that most men only change their bed sheets four times a year. Do you think she wants to get cozy with your 3-month old funk? Not likely. Leave ‘em two weeks maximum, and then get them in the wash. Be sure to invest in a sturdy and attractive bed to make centerpiece of the room. One she’ll notice and want to “try out.” Throw on a couple of big pillows in bold colors to add some comfort and pop… but don’t go crazy otherwise it looks like you’re trying too hard. (Or read Marie Claire.)
3. Stow Your Stuff
No girl wants to see your complete box set of seasons 1-8 of 24 lying around amid Splinter Cell and your well-read copy of The Game. So invest in some good, solid shelves (cinder blocks and plywood may have worked in college, but not now), and attractive storage containers that can keep your clutter contained. And when thinking what to leave, out, keep it to a minimum—an alarm clock, framed pic of mom, those antique cufflinks grand dad left you, and that’s about it. This gives the impression that you’re an organized guy, at least on the surface. You can decide whether you let her see the inside of your drawers or not…
4. Set the Mood
Like I said earlier, don’t try too hard with the furniture or accessories. Less is more here, so just go with the essentials. Simple curtains or blinds are a must (she likes privacy), and a soft, comfortable rug, especially if you have wooden or tile floors, helps. When it comes to lighting, stick to one decent looking lamp next to the bed so you can easily lean over and switch off. Want to go that extra step? ? Women love love scented candles, so check out some nice scents that should neutralize some of that musk that tends to linger…
It’s not hard to have your bachelor bedroom in dating shape, and doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg either. Keep things clean and simple and the ladies will appreciate it.
